WHO WE ARE

Global Citizen and the United Way of Southeastern Pennsylvania organize the annual Greater Philadelphia Martin Luther King Day of Service. Our organizing headquarters is located at the United Way Building in Center City, Philadelphia. We provide a range of services, including: technical training and assistance to organizations interested in hosting King Day of Service projects, the tracking of all King Day of Service projects and numbers of volunteers throughout the six county region, the matching of all interested groups and individuals with volunteer project opportunities and free T-shirts to every King Day of Service volunteer. Our mission is to also help support organizations and individuals to continue active citizenship throughout the year.

Todd Bernstein, President of Global Citizen, an organization that promotes volunteer service and civic engagement, is the founder and Director of the Greater Philadelphia Martin Luther King Day of Service. In 1994, as State Director for then Pennsylvania U.S. Senator Harris Wofford, Bernstein helped Wofford and Atlanta Congressman John Lewis start the National King Day of Service.

Felicia Fowler, Assistant Director based at the United Way of Southeastern PA, brings a variety of experience working with citizen mobilization efforts. Felicia's professional experience includes work with the Corporation for National and Community Service, managing CNCS programs, and coordinating direct service for community based agencies. Felicia holds a Master's degree in Public Policy with a focus on civic engagement and public participation.

Heather Wertz, is the Associate Director of Civic Engagement at United Way of Southeastern Pennsylvania, she currently serves as Senior Advisor to the King Day of Service and helps to oversee the operations and logistics of the headquarters. Heather brings a variety of experience working within the Philadelphia Community. Heather's professional experiences include a mixture of direct service and social service administration. Heather has worked in collaboration with over 50 City offices and over 200 non-profits on issues related to; community development, the use of community information systems, and conducting social research. Heather's work has been published in the Journal of Community Practice. Heather Wertz holds a Masters in Social Work Degree from the University of Pennsylvania.

Brendan Ward, Special Projects Coordinator based at the United Way of Southeastern Pennsylvania and serving as an AmeriCorps*VISTA, joins the King Day of Service staff after completing an AmeriCorps term of service in Alaska. He graduated with a degree in Sociology/Anthropology from Albright College. While attending Albright he played an active role in the College's administration and in student politics. He has had internships with the Montgomery County Office of Children and Youth and the Reading Housing Authority.

Sarah Millard, Special Projects Coordinator based at the United Way of Southeastern Pennsylvania and serving as an AmeriCorps VISTA, joins King Day of Service after graduating from The University of Pennsylvania with a degree in International Relations and a concentration in Hispanic Studies. She has previously worked as a research assistant for the Foreign Policy Research Institute in Philadelphia, and interned with the US Department of Health and Human Services, Office on Women's Health. After her service as an AmeriCorps VISTA, she hopes to pursue a degree in law, focusing on International and Human Rights Law.

Every year, tireless volunteers log hundreds of hours in our office in December and January, helping to answer questions, register volunteers, and support MLK Day of Service staff. In addition, volunteers assist us with the bundling of over 40,000 T-shirts that are distributed around the region to participating host organizations. The organizing efforts and devotion of these volunteers in promoting Dr. King's legacy of citizen action help to make the Greater Philadelphia Martin Luther King Day of Service the largest and most successful King Day of Service event in the nation every year!
